To work, to pray, to play in the Light of the Lord
We celebrated Other Faiths Week at the beginning of February.
The pupils visited various places of worship to gain an insight into the different religions that make up our diverse world.
Year 2 - Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue
Year 2 visited Beth Hamidrash Hagadol to learn more about Judaism. They listened to information about all of the different things the Jewish people celebrate. They saw a Decalogue, which is the Jewish version of The Ten Commandments and looked at a Jewish prayer book called a Siddur.
Year 3 – Leeds Grand Mosque
Year 3 visited the Leeds Grand Mosque as part of "Other Faiths Week". When they got there they had to take their shoes off before they went in to keep the area clean. They learnt about the different times of day Muslims pray and how they have a special clock in the Mosque that tells them the times of prayer. Then they listened to Asaad sing the call to prayer that is played across speakers to the community. They learned about the 5 pillars of Islam, the Qu'ran and important people in the Islamic faith. They were also very lucky because they were able to try on Islamic clothing and traditional clothing from countries where Muslims are from.
Year 4 - Hindu Temple
Year 4 have visited the Hindu Temple in Headingly. The children enjoyed finding out about the Hindu faith and asked lots of interesting questions. They heard about the origins of Hinduism in India more than 4,000 years ago. They were very impressed with the amazing wall paintings, statues and decorations. The children learned that Hindus worship only one God and that the many images of different Gods and Goddesses were different representations of the same God. It was a lovely experience and the children returned to school keen to find out more through their own research.
Year 5 - Jamyang Buddhist Centre
Year 5 visited Jamyang Buddhist Centre where they practiced meditation and talked about Buddhist teachings. They saw statues of Buddha, Prayer Wheels, Prayer Flags, Offering Bowls and the burning of incense. They also learnt that Buddhist try to live good, honest, helpful and peaceful lives.
Year 6 - Sikh Temple
This week Year 6 have been learning about Sikhism. Firstly, they learned about the Sikh place of worship - the Gurdwara. They learned about the rules before entering, which include taking your shoes off and covering your hair as a sign of respect. They acted out what you must do when you enter the Gurdwara. They also learned about the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh Holy Book); creating their own with poems about Guru Nanak.
