To work, to pray, to play in the Light of the Lord

Year 1  Home Learning

Welcome to Year 1’s Home Learning Page

Here you will find some activities you may like to try at home.  You can email me to show me any work you have completed but please don’t feel that you have to – it is entirely optional.   Home Learning needs to work for your family so only complete work you feel comfortable doing.

Thank you to everyone who has sent me pictures of the children baking and playing.   I have loved seeing some pictures of their fabulous writing too!

Challenge 1:  Can you think of some questions you would want to ask the blind man?  Maybe how he is feeling or what he thinks about Jesus now this has happened?

Challenge 2: Can you use the comic strip to help you retell the story?  Make sure you put it in the right order.

English:

This week is all about crazy hair!

This week's story is about how Jesus calmed the storm.  Can you try the activities below?

History

This half term we were planning on studying 'Wonderful Women' and all the amazing things that Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale and Marie Curie have done for medicine.  We are starting this week by looking at Mary Seacole.   Below is a slide show of some facts and an activity sheet to complete.  You could research Mary's life by searching her name on the internet or by reading any books you might have about her.

Phonics and Reading

Don’t forget to keep watching the Phonics lessons on-line!  They are really helpful to support the childrens learning and development in Phonics.  A new Year 1 lesson is uploaded every morning at 10:30am.

This week would have seen us completing the Phonics Screening Check.  Why not try looking at last years check?  The words with pictures of aliens are made up words and the words with no pictures are real words.  Remember to say the sounds then blend them together to read the word.

Writing

What have you been up to over the last 2 weeks?  Did you go out and enjoy the sunshine?  Can you write down everything that happened?

Make sure your sentence includes a capital letter, finger spaces and is punctuated at the end with a full stop or question mark.

Over the next few weeks we will be doing lots of different types of writing so it would be good to get some practice in this week!

Feel free to send me a picture of your writing if you want to share it. :)

Being Mindful

If you're looking for some calm, physical activity then why not check out Cosmic Kids Yoga!  This was a favourite of ours in class if we ever had a wet play!

Train your brain looks like it is a great game to play!

Writing:

I have spent the last few weeks writing your end of year reports and have been looking back at all of your amazing writing,  I really liked when we learnt about Little Red Riding Hood but we flipped the story and changed the characters around!  Do you think you could think of story and swap the characters around?  Maybe you could change the pigs to The 3 Little Dogs?

Let me know how you get on! :)

Writing and Science

This week I wondered if you could do some research on an animal of your choice.  If we were in school we would have been learning about animals in Science!  Could you use the internet or any books you have at home to find out about the size of your chosen animal? Or what they like to eat?

I’d love to see what you find out so don’t forget to email me a photo of what you find!

Music

Don't forget you can check out Miss Lee's music lessons by clicking the link below.  We normally see her every Wednesday and always have lots of fun.  (You might end up singing the songs all day long though!!!)

Music

The lovely Miss Lee has recorded some music lessons for you to access at home.  Normally, Miss Lee comes to school every Wednesday and teaches us new songs and how to play some instruments.  I hope you like watching the videos and singing along with her!

Phonics

Click the link below to visit the Letters and Sounds Phonics lessons.  At school we follow Letters and Sounds so this is a fab idea to help support your child with their sounds and blending.  Follow the Year 1 lessons and let me know how you get on!

Below is a reading activity you may like to try.  Help your child to read the text then try and answer the questions on the next page.  Don't worry about printing to pages- just read and answer them verbally!

Topic

In school we had been looking at the weather and seasons and how they change so often.  We had been keeping a weather book to compare the weather we were experiencing in Armley and what the weather was like in Eritrea.  Could you keep a weather chart for where you live and choose another country and check out the weather there?

We liked using the BBC weather website at school and learnt about what all the weather symbols and different numbers meant.

Could you find the country you choose on a map?  How long would it take to fly there?  Does the country have a special flag?  You could write and few sentences about the country you chose too!

Let me know how you get on!

Phonics and Reading

Can you choose your favourite story at home and read it?  Then I would like you to write about why you like it so much. You can email me a picture of what you have written if you like and I can share it on this page!  You might inspire someone to read a book that you like so much.

To help continue to support Phonics.  Please log onto Phonics Play and select the newer version of the site (This allows you to access it on devices that do not support flash such as iPads and iPhones) and play Acorn Adventures!  You can choose whichever sounds you like.
