The winner of last week's challenge is.......Tommy!!

Tommy created a lego house for his pet hamster. I love the creativeness and the effort Tommy has put into the pet house. He has carefully thought about the layout and design to make it accessible for his hamster. He has even put some food in his pet house. The hamster also looks very happy with their new home. Well done Tommy!

Your challenge for this week is to design and create your own board game! It could be your own version of monopoly or snakes and ladders or it can be a completely new game. It would be lovely to see you and your family playing your own board game. I have attached a link below which might help you get started.

As it is May half term next week, you have until Monday 1st June to submit your entries and the winner will be announced on Tuesday 2nd June. Good luck!

Maths

This week, you will be focusing on recapping your knowledge on fractions. The first two lessons we have covered in class and include adding fractions with the same denominator and adding fractions with a different denominator.

REMEMBER if the fractions don't have the same denominator we must find a common denominator to add them together. Whatever you multiply the bottom by, you MUST do the same to the top.

Lesson 3 & 4, we have not covered yet in Maths but I would like you to have a go! I suggest you watch the videos for these lessons to help you with your learning. I have attached the link below :)

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week it is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme this year is KINDNESS.

During the extreme times of the Coronavirus outbreak the world has seen fantastic displays of kindness from so many people, all doing little things in their own ways to support people struggling due to the outbreak. During stressful situations such as this, it is so refreshing to see community spirit and basic human kindness coming to light. Not all kindness needs to be bold acts of heroism or a big donation of some sorts. Most kindness is spread from the small actions we can share with those around us.

This week, I would like you carry out an act of kindness. I have listed some activities below that might help you think of how you could be kind this week.

  • Write a poem about Kindness and give it to someone

Kindness is the colour of…
It smells like…
It sounds like…
It feels like…
It looks like…
It tastes like….
When I am kind I feel…

  • Create a postcard and send it to someone you miss or someone who might be lonely
  • Call a friend that you haven’t spoken to for a while
  • Tell a family member how much you love and appreciate them
  • Make a cup of tea for someone you live with
  • Help with a household chore at home
  • Tell someone you know why you are thankful for them and proud of them
  • Reach out to call a friend, family member or neighbour who is experiencing loneliness or self-isolation
  • Donate to a charity
  • Send a motivational text to a friend who is struggling
  • Offer to skill share with a friend via video call – you could teach guitar, dance etc.
  • Send someone you know a joke to cheer them up

Remember it is also important to be kind to yourself! Do something you enjoy or love doing.

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK

The winner of last week's challenge is.......Giuseppe & Katelyn!!

I was very impressed with how creative both Giuseppe and Katelyn were with finding an unusual place to read. It looks like they went to great lengths and heights to achieve their pictures! Well done guys!

This week's challenge is for you to design and create (with your adults permission) a house for a pet. You can design your pet home on paper or in your work booklet and take a picture. You do not have to create the home but you can if you wish and have permission. If you don't have a pet, don't worry! I want you to choose your favourite animal and design a house for them. You could even do some research before designing your pet home.

I have attached a video below which might inspire you. Miss Pickard decided it was time revamp Cino's (her beloved guinea pig) living space. I think she likes her new home!

Remember you have until Monday 18th May to submit your challenges and the winner will be chosen on Tuesday 19th. Good Luck!

History

Friday 8th May is a public holiday known as Victory in Europe day or VE Day. We celebrate this important day as it marks the end of WW2 in Europe. On this day the people laughed, danced and celebrated together as they had reached the end of a very dark time.

As we have completed lots of work on WW2 this year, I thought it would be nice for you to complete an activity to celebrate VE Day. I have listed some activities below and added some resources.

  • Write a diary entry imagining you are a survivor of WW2 on VE Day - How do you feel? What can you see? What can you hear? What does this mean for England?
  • Write a newspaper article announcing VE Day - Dont forget your headline, sub-heading, byline and intro!
  • Design a VE Day party - Use the planning sheet to help you
  • Create a piece of art work which represent VE Day

Week 5 - 27/04/20

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK

Well done to everyone who participated in last week's challenge and sent in pictures of your baking/cooking, I was very impressed!

This winner of last week's challenge is......... Penny!!

Penny thought it would be fun to make a medieval meal based off research she had completed. She decided to make a royal banquet which included: roast pork, pottage (mushy peas), roast turnips, herb salad (mixed leaves and herbs), custard tarts and homemade apple sauce. She helped set the table for the meal and she even dressed up! Well done Penny, I was super impressed with the effort you had gone to for the challenge and the meal looked delicious :) Have a look at Penny's medieval meal below:

Well done to our runners up Ethan, Fallon, Igor and Maya! You all did a great job and your buns/cakes all look delicious too :)

Your challenge for this week is to create your own fitness routine! It could be a dance routine, a routine on the trampoline or it could even be a football practise/drill. You can send in a video of you doing your routine or you can send a picture, it is entirely up to you. Challenge yourself to get creative and have some fun (you could even try and include your parents or siblings). I cant wait to see your challenges! Remember you have until Monday 4th May to send in your entries :)

Suggested Activities

Reading:

Our Guided Reading text for this term has been 'Who Let the Gods Out'. We have had lots of fun reading the hilarious adventure story and have completed work on character and setting descriptions.

Here are some ideas of what you could do at home for guided reading based on the text:

  • Write a prediction on how you think the story is going to end - What do you think will happen to Elliott and his mum? Will Virgo still be banned from using her powers? Will Thanatos find the chaos stone? Do you think Mrs Patricia Porshley-Plum will get her devilish hands on Home Farm?
  • Create a storyboard to summarise the events that have happened in the story so far.
  • Which character would you most like to meet and why? Explain your answer.
  • Write down three questions you would want to ask a character from the book. Now try to write their answers.
  • Make a fact file about a topic from the book.
  • Choose a key moment from the story and change the event - write what would have happened next.

 English:

In English, we have linked our guided reading text to our writing and have been looking at writing our own Greek mythical story. Here are some suggestions that you could do at home:

  • Design and create your own Greek mythical God and write a character description.
  • Write your own Greek mythical story. Follow the structure of: Setting - Hero - Dilemma - Quest - Powers - Monster/Evil God - Conflict - Resolution.
  • Write a newspaper report in the style of the 'Daily Argus' about and event e.g the events from the wedding
  • Create a comic book scene inspired by 'Who Let the Gods Out'.
  • Imagine you are one of the characters from the book. Write a diary entry about and event from the book from that character's point of view.
  • Write a report from the Zodiac Council on why they have taken Virgo's powers.
  • Write a letter from the perspective of Mrs Patricia Porshley-Plum to Elliott, listing the reasons why he should sell Home Farm to her.

Other English writing ideas:

  • Keep a diary of what you are doing during your time off school.
  • Create your own adventure story.
  • Use Pobble 365 to write stories/character descriptions/improving sentences.
  • Write a letter to a family member or neighbour.
  • Create your own comic book.

Science:

This term in Science we have been looking at 'Living things and their habitat'. Here are a few ideas of what you could do at home for Science:

  • Create an Insect hotel or home and place it in your garden or an outside area.
  • Keep a diary entry each day of any visitors you may have or any changes you notice in your insect hotel/home.
  • Write instructions on how to create an Insect hotel or home.
  • Research the life cycle of a bird and create a poster or presentation and present it back to somebody at home.
  • Choose your favourite animal and write a non-chronological report about your animal including what it's life cycle is like.
  • Watch the animals LIVE at https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/panda-cam/ - Can you create a diary entry everyday about what animals you see and what they are doing or create a fact file about an animal?
  • Create your own Zoo and include drawings and facts about each animal in your zoo.
